Green-ish Thumb

I can’t believe May is almost over already. It has been feeling a lot more like March or April around here in Central Kansas. We have gotten so much rain these last few weeks and the temps have been in the 50’s more than the 80’s. I definitely don’t want to complain about rain, but our garden could use a couple of consecutive sunny days.

We planted our garden a little over a month ago, and some things are really starting to take off!…(and some of it, not so much). This is our first real garden that we’ve done, and we weren’t sure what it would amount to. We tilled our garden about 15′ x 15′. We wanted to have room to plant things in sections and still have a path about one or two feet to walk around each section.

IMG_1820 So far we’ve planted:

  • tomatoes
  • potatoes
  • eggplant
  • strawberries
  • canteloupe
  • zucchini
  • green onions
  • peppers
  • radishes
  • cucumbers
  • asparagus (2nd year)

I also planted some cilantro, peppermint, rosemary, and oregano in pots. I may end up integrating them in the garden one of these days too.

IMG_1877IMG_1833IMG_1884The tomatoes and radishes are almost ready. We were afraid some of this cold weather was going to stunt our tomatoes, but they are doing good so far. (fingers crossed!)

IMG_1881 IMG_1835Everything else is starting to sprout and give me hope. It’s so nice to see little pops of green in what was just dirt for weeks. Our strawberries, however, are not looking so hot. I don’t know if it’s just too early, or if we have them in the wrong spot. I don’t think they are getting quite enough sun in the spot at the back of the garden that we have them in.

It’s still a work in progress. I want to add in some bug repelling plants and flowers around the garden. I would also like to add some sort of border or edging, maybe next year when we know for sure what size garden works for us. We have also caught some rabbits feasting on our plants, so  we may end up fencing the whole thing in if necessary.
